Moyra Davey began Copperheads, her images of Abraham Lincoln’s profile as engraved on US pennies, as an investigation into the psychology of money. This investigation is analogous to chrysopoeia; the camera acts of a type of philosopher’s stone, transmuting a base metal into something more meaningful and enduring.
